Never the Bride

Acrylic on 6 canvas panels

Dimensions: 24x36”

I find that working within constraints and systems can be incredibly liberating and exciting. They are a way of calming the inner dialog and focusing attention onto what is essential.

In this simple piece I chose to work with one shape (a quarter circle) and three colors plus black. It is such a simple statement and I love the flat clear colors. It reminds me of so many things that I love that are made with limited color black outlines, like stained glass windows and comic books.

………

I love layering shapes and colors to see what kind of balance can be achieved in a composition. These pieces are all made by arranging the canvas into a grid of squares and then populating them with quarter circles so that there could be no open ends (ie. each quarter circle had to meet another quarter circle or an edge of the canvas). Then I layered the shapes to create a composition.

I did literally hundreds of sketches on pads of squared paper to explore the possible combinations until I found ones that felt right.
