Painting on a shaped support is another step in the journey of art from image to object. Dispensing with the traditional rectangular format makes it harder to see the painting as a picture “of something” and therefore easier to see it as “the thing itself”. It is no longer a window to the world and opens up the possibility that it could be a window to other things.
I love the way that this piece has a conversation going on between a cool 1970s color vibe and the Tibetan Mandala like gradient which compels my eye towards the center. It seems to have a subtle glowing energy.
