I often incorporate random events in my work. As well as exploring questions of free will and choice in the creative process. I find it is a great way for me to get away from my own preconceptions and get out of my own way. In these Pill shaped paintings I made a color wheel from a defined palette and when I needed inspiration I spun the wheel to pick the next color.
It is surprising how often the same colors and combinations occurred from a seemingly random selection process. In this piece the color wheel insisted on this canary yellow and cerulean blue and I went with it. Randomness is not as “random” as we assume.
